Kale (leafy types)

The leafy kales are amazingly hardy foliar accents for fall, winter and spring landscapes. The foliage of Redbor starts out with a purple tinge which deepens to a deep merlot color when temps cool. Winterbor adds a frilly, almost “broccoli”-type texture, and lacinato brings a linear crinkle to the pallet. All are edible, but if this is your goal take care that you are buying plants that have been grown for edible use. Those grown for ornamental use may have been treated to control growth and make the habit neater and more attractive. Be sure to give kales room- they can get quite large as the season progresses- sometimes reaching a height and width of 2 ft.
