About Us
“You must do something to make the world more beautiful.” – Barbara Cooney, “Miss Rumphius”
Barton’s is a family-owned and -operated wholesale nursery supporting landscape contractors, locally-owned garden centers, flower farms, and pollinators in the Central/Northern Alabama region. What started out as a bramble-covered patch of lumpy, lumbered neglected pasture, with no water or power and a landlocked dirt road for access, has become, over the years, a small business dedicated to the quality of our product, service to our customers, and to promoting the value of our industry.
What We Do
We specialize in annuals, perennials and herbs.
Wholesale to the trade only.
Birmingham’s gardening community is unique. There are a number of independently-owned garden centers and landscape designers/contractors dedicated to their craft and their customers. There are several nationally-recognized private gardens tucked into places around town you would never expect, and public gardens for all to enjoy. We are grateful to be a small part of that valuable community of local businesses and gardeners.
We offer delivery to both garden centers and landscape shops and job sites.
In order to support struggling pollinator and bird populations, we are expanding our palette of regionally native plants along with our “international food aisle” selection.
Our Story
An Alabama Family Grower
Barton’s began in 1982, at the far end of nowhere, past the silo and the cow crossing, and down an unpaved dirt road surrounded by privet in the sleepy town of Alabaster, Alabama.
40+ years on, residential and commercial development approach the nursery from all sides and we find ourselves in the geographical thick of it.
However, one thing remains the same: our care for the quality of our plants and our deep appreciation for our customers.
Future
Looking forward
As we hand the reins to the next generation of Bartons, we look forward to continuing our legacy of quality and service, and to adapting to and improving in the future.
Sustainability Goals
- Recycling: Continue to participate in the full-circle recycling program offered by our plastic supplier, East Jordan Plastics. Along with a deeper exploration of options for fully recyclable materials.
- Continued integration of insect biocontrols with greater involvement and efficiency in order to have less and less chemicals involved in the process of growing.
- Continued development of our native plant program to support pollinators and the people that love them.
